Addenda

Owned by a member of the locally famous Pope family in the 1800s, this historic home has seen much history since its construction. Current estimates of the age of the home range from 1868 to 1881. It is known that in 1892 Frederick Albert Pope leased the home with its barn to Dr. Raymond Hawkeswood Phillimore, a photograph of whom is hanging in the master bedroom of the house. When Frederick Pope passed away in 1931 his son Almond H. Pope took possession. In 1934 he leased it to Miss Ida Jean Fenton, who married and bought the home in 1948. In 1951 the home was again sold to Willie Wendell Roberts, who owned it until the Veterans Land Act bought it in 1954 for Lloyd James Lane, who lived there until Camille St-Laurent bought it in 1958. This is the St-Laurent after whom the road adjacent is named, as it was he who divided the land to allow the development of the street. In 1984 it was bought by Michel Vaillancourt and Cécile Bourassa, who did much to modernise the home while keeping its traditional style. In doing the renovations, they found documents indicating transactions between Frederick Pope and British merchants dated from the 1890's, which were donated to the Historical Society of the Haut Saint-François.
